Jakarta as the capital city of Indonesia have been the most congested city in Indonesia. Based on Statistic Agency of Jakarta, the population in Jakarta in 2010 to 2015 is in average of 15,045 person per kilometer square. This fact is not surprising being the center of Indonesian government, industrial, and economic and also the fastest growing city in ASEAN Jakarta is attractive to many people. High mobility in Jakarta is also not a hot news. The average of 1,629,863 new vehicle is floating in the 48.5 kilometer square road every year. Traffic congestion have been one of the biggest problem in Jakarta for the past couple years. Jakarta desperately needs a massive transportation as a solution to this problem.
The first mass rapid transportation (MRT) is finally constructed in the heart of Jakarta. The project which was initially planned back on 1985 as a non-government project is now being constructed in 2 phases as a government project. The first phase tendered in between 2009 to 2010 after officially announced by the Government of Indonesia in 2005. Japan Bank of International Cooperation (JBIC) agreed to finance the project through financial management by Japanese International Corporation Agency (JICA) and signed on an agreement on 28 November 2006 with Indonesian Ambassador at the time. After the agreement signed between the two institutions, PT. MRT Jakarta was formed as regional owned enterprise and the developer of the project. The design and other necessary planning of the project was done in between 2008 to 2009.

Not only being the first MRT, the project is also the first subway project in Indonesia. The first phase of MRT Jakarta is stretched in 15.2 kilometer connecting Lebak Bulus Station in south Jakarta and Hotel Indonesia Circle at the center of Jakarta. The construction consist of 7 stations in 9.2 kilometer elevated track lines and 6 underground stations in 6 kilometer underground tunnel. Tokyu – Wijaya Karya Joint Operation and Obayashi – Shimizu – Jaya Konstruksi Joint Venture are the contractors awarded for the elevated track line. Meanwhile, Shimizu – Obayashi – Wijaya Karya – Jaya Konstruksi Joint Venture, Sumitomo Mitsui – Hutama Karya Joint Operation are awarded to do the underground tunnel.
